Cake vs Yeast Donuts- which one should you pick?! I'll break it down for you.
Yeast Donuts: As it states, this type of donut is leavened with yeast. It will be lighter to eat, larger and fluffier than other donuts, and if you don’t have any icing/toppings on it, the dough will be less sweet. Those that like jelly/cream filled, long johns, fritters, glazed etc, you will be getting a yeast donut.
Cake Donut: This dense like donut is going to be leavened with something like baking soda and/or baking powder. The cake donut will be more filling as it is denser than the yeast donut so if you are really hungry, this may be your solution! Unlike the yeast donuts, which get their flavor from the glaze, the batter for the cake donuts can come in different flavors too! Those that like old fashioned, buttermilk etc will be eating the cake donut!
Once you know which type of dough you prefer, then you can decipher which type of donut you prefer to eat! I have listed some of the most common options found in a bakery below:
Glazed: yeast donut. plain with some sort of glaze like a sweet sugar flavor.
Old-Fashioned : cake donuts- ring shape- edges are tapered. Usually a tad bit crunchier.
Glazed, Plain or Chocolate are the three main flavors.
Twist: yeast donut. long unfilled pretzel looking donut. glazed in different flavors or just sugared.
Filled: yeast donut. cream, jelly, jams etc are in the center of the donut.
Long Johns: yeast donut. long shaped donut. usually will be iced with chocolate or vanilla.
Fritters. the dough has chunks of the ingredient added (i.e. an apple fritter has chunks of apples). irregular shape. usually it is glazed
Cider: cake donuts: most people know these during the fall season as farms make apple cider donuts. They add apple cider, cinnamon and nutmeg into the cake batter. They then are topped with sugar
Donut Holes: yeast or cake donuts. small round donuts. glazed or sugared.
